The End-of-Life of Vehicles and Composites

Glass Fibre Europe, together with key partners from across the composite materials supply chain—including CEFIC UP/VE, Epoxy Europe, and EuCIA—has submitted a joint position paper to EU co-legislators regarding the ongoing revision of the End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) Regulation.

A Unique Opportunity for Circularity in Europe

The revision of the ELV framework represents a unique opportunity to integrate composite materials into Europe’s circular economy—not only within the automotive sector, but also in industries such as wind energy and boating. The composite materials supply chain believes this regulatory update is crucial for unlocking the full potential of advanced materials to deliver greater sustainability, innovation, and resource efficiency across European value chains.

Key Messages from the Composite Industry:

  • Demonstrated Feasibility: Composites have demonstrated the feasibility of collecting and reusing composite components, contributing to more sustainable product lifecycles.
  • Synergies in Recycling: Composites and plastics together present synergies and complementary pathways in emerging recycling technologies, strengthening the potential for effective material recovery.
  • Industrial-Scale Solutions: Advanced recycling technologies for composites are already operating at industrial scale, with additional innovations progressing rapidly.

A Call for Supportive Regulation

With a supportive and evidence-based regulatory framework, the industry is confident these solutions can be further scaled up and broadly deployed. Glass Fibre Europe and its partners call on policymakers to seize this moment to make the ELV Regulation a true enabler for circularity, innovation, and industrial resilience in Europe.
