Life Cycle Assessment

Data provided by Glass Fibre Europe members
allow reliable LCA comparison of composite material
with other traditional materials.

In brief

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is an internationally standardised methodology defined as the systematic analysis of the potential environmental impacts of products or services during their entire life cycle.

Why is it important

Continuous Filament Glass Fibre products are the key component of light, strong and durable composite material used in many end-use applications. European manufacturers are continuously improving the environmental performance of their operations and the environmental impacts of their products. Since 2011 (with updates every five years), Glass Fibre Europe members, with the support of an independent third-party consultant, provide reliable LCA data for main products lines (Roving, Chopped Strands and Mats). The continuous filament glass fibres LCAs are publicly available and can be downloaded from this webpage (see link below).

EuCIA EcoCalculator

The European Composites Industry Association (EuCIA) has developed an online tool called Eco Impact Calculator, aka EcoCalculator. It provides the possibility of calculating the life cycle impacts of various composite materials and parts, and support downstream users’ material selection and comparison with traditional materials. The tool uses the latest data provided by Glass Fibre Europe for its products.
