Today, the European Commission has initiated an interim review of the current anti-dumping and anti-subsidy measures on imports of glass fibre from China following a complaint by Glass Fibre Europe. Glass Fibre Europe requested this investigation because there has been increasing evidence in recent years that the measures at their current level are no longer sufficient to counter Chinese dumping and distortive subsidies.
Glass fibre is the backbone of numerous lightweight material solutions in key sectors of our economy, including construction, transport, energy, industrial, aerospace, military and many more. As a foundational element in the 21st-century glass-based technology value chain, glass fibre production plays a pivotal role in driving the transition toward a resilient and carbon-neutral economy.
Cédric Janssens, Secretary General of Glass Fibre Europe, underscored the critical need for effective trade defence measures, stating, “It is essential that these measures are calibrated appropriately to ensure a level playing field on the European market. They not only safeguard our domestic production and local jobs but also secure the investments needed for innovation and the development of new applications. These factors are vital for the long-term competitiveness and resilience of the EU glass-fibre based value chain.”
Glass Fibre Europe is available to assist the Commission with any information required during the investigation. “We trust the European Commission to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation and that it will take the necessary steps to ensure the effectiveness of the measures”, concluded Cédric Janssens.
