Glass industry’s recommendations for the Clean Industrial Deal

Glass Fibre Europe, in collaboration with its partners in the Glass Alliance Europe, has presented a set of focused recommendations to the European Commission in support of a Clean Industrial Deal. Earlier this year, President von der Leyen committed to delivering this Deal within the first 100 days of her new mandate, marking a pivotal moment for Europe’s industrial and environmental future.

To ensure the EU industry remains competitive while transitioning to a low-carbon economy, Glass Fibre Europe has outlined key measures needed to accelerate the adoption of sustainable technologies and policies. These recommendations are part of a comprehensive approach aimed at positioning the EU as a global leader in sustainable manufacturing.

Our key proposals include:

  • Supply affordable and continuous low-carbon energy sources to ensure the stability and competitiveness of the industry.
  • Scale up investments in energy grids and infrastructure to support the deployment of low-carbon technologies.
  • Allocate more EU funds specifically to support manufacturing investments in the glass sector.
  • Introduce policies favouring local content for lower-carbon and European-made glass products.
  • Thoroughly assess the impact of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) before extending it to new sectors.
  • Reform the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) to prevent premature shortfalls and to support electrification in the glass industry.
  • Enforce timely trade defence measures when facing unfair competition from non-EU producers.

Delivering a Clean Industrial Deal is a crucial step to ensure that Europe’s glass industry can continue to thrive in a low-carbon economy,” said Cédric Janssens, Secretary General of Glass Fibre Europe. “We urge the new Commission to prioritize these measures, which are essential to achieving our sustainability goals and securing the future of Europe’s industrial base.

With these recommendations, Glass Fibre Europe and its partners in Glass Alliance Europe look forward to engaging with EU policymakers to shape a robust framework that ensures a sustainable and competitive future for Europe.
