Glass Fibre Europe has finalised its input to support the European Commission’s upcoming proposal for an Industrial Decarbonisation Accelerator Act (IDAA), providing the perspective of the European continuous filament glass fibre (CFGF) industry.
Our latest position paper sets out how Europe can better support competitiveness and investment in upstream industrial sectors like glass fibre — a key enabler of strategic value chains including renewable energy, mobility, construction, aerospace, defence, and electronics.
The paper identifies key structural barriers currently holding back the development of lead markets for low-carbon products:
- Market distortion caused by unfair imports
- Cost disadvantages of low-carbon production
- Price sensitivity and limited demand for greener alternatives
- Limited recognition of upstream materials in sustainability policy
To address these challenges, the paper puts forward a range of targeted policy recommendations:
- Enforce trade defence measures effectively across the value chain, supported by robust customs controls
- Reduce the cost of clean production through direct support and improved access to carbon-neutral energy and decarbonised raw materials
- Apply sustainability and local content criteria to input materials in public procurement
- Incentivise non-price criteria in B2B markets, starting with strategic sectors
- Streamline permitting processes for decarbonisation projects
This is a timely opportunity to align climate ambition with industrial strategy — and to create the right conditions for Europe’s clean industries to scale and compete.
