Together with other energy-intensive industries, the glass sectors are sounding the alarm. Competitiveness is eroding, and plants continue to close across Europe. As Europe’s industrial backbone, our industries urgently need effective measures to address the crisis.
In a joint statement adopted on 02 February, energy-intensive industries call on EU policymakers to act swiftly and decisively to restore competitiveness and secure Europe’s critical value chains. The statement highlights the severe pressure facing industrial producers and sets out concrete priorities to address the current crisis:
- ⚡ Cut total energy costs
- 🌍 Tackle unfair trade practices through fast and efficient use of existing and the adoption of new trade defence instruments
- 🛒 Create demand for “Made in Europe” products
- 💶 Protect the industry from additional carbon costs in 2026 and instead support decarbonisation investments
These measures are essential not only to prevent further plant closures, but also to enable industries to invest in Europe’s clean transition while maintaining jobs, production capacity, and strategic autonomy.
